HEALTH AND SAFETY REPRESENTATIVE INITIAL

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed to provide Health and safety Representatives with the knowledge and skill to understand the Legislation, responsibilities and duties to successfully address issues raised by workers and to manage health and safety issues in the workplace.

KEY LEARNING OUTCOMES:

At the completion of the course you will be able to:

​

  • Explain the overall role and functions of HSRs in the workplace

  • Explain the role of a Health and Safety Representative as an advocate for workers to resolve health and safety issues

  • Describe the importance of worker engagement and participation in terms of the HSWA and other legislative requirements

  • Describe key roles in terms of worker participation and engagement in relation to the HSWA

  • Explain and demonstrate the overall role, powers and functions of a Health and Safety Representative in a New Zealand workplace

  • Explain the Health and Safety Representative’s role in supporting workers with injury/ill-health rehabilitation.

  • Describe key health and safety legislation and documentation that supports health and safety at work and the role of the health and safety regulator.

  • Describe when and how the Health and Safety Representative can direct unsafe work to cease.

  • Identify the obligations and responsibilities of a PCBU and WorkSafe New Zealand towards the Health and Safety Representative

  • Describe the key duties and the application of those duties in the workplace in accordance with health and safety legislation.

  • Describe the risk management process and the importance of communicating with workers and management

  • Describe and demonstrate the powers and obligations that a health and safety representative has in terms of issuing a provisional improvement notice (PIN) and how and when to direct a worker to cease unsafe work

  • Describe the rights and process for ceasing unsafe work.
