SAFE MANAGEMENT, HANDLING AND STORAGE OF HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
​
This course is for people who work with hazardous substances to identify health and safety risks from chemicals in the workplace (WorkSafe stats 600-900 people die a year from work related illness, many from chemical use). You will be able to classify hazardous according to their intrinsic properties, demonstrate knowledge of safe storage, tracking requirements, handling, and disposal of hazardous substances storage and substances needing a certified handler. We will cover the potential adverse effects of hazardous substances, exposure monitoring and management of a chemical spill response.

At the completion of the course you will be able to:

Overview of the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017

Explain hazardous substance classifications

Identify hazardous substances in a workplace that could cause adverse effects

Using information in SDS, labels or signage interpret product specific information relating to hazardous substances. (Storage, safe handling, disposal, PPE, adverse effects and first aid)

Demonstrate knowledge of a workplace’s procedures to prevent adverse effects of hazardous substances

Describe response and reporting requirements in relation to uncontrolled release of hazardous substances

Demonstrate knowledge of the potential adverse effects of hazardous substances on the body and environment, types of exposure monitoring, and treatment options

Demonstrate knowledge of safe storage, tracking requirements, handling, and disposal of hazardous substances

Manage waste and dispose of a hazardous substance in accordance with organisational requirements

Describe the workplace procedure for dealing with situations where a substance or container is unmarked or unlabelled

Identify a workplace’s emergency procedures and describe the response information for a hazardous substance related emergency
